Here's Hana's slightly lengthy development thing!  Well, it's got pictures so it's actually not that long but anywho, you guys wanted Hana's development from her conception to now and I hope you enjoy it!

•Stumbled upon the above picture on tumblr.  I first imagined a highschool bully for Abbey for TΛB.  The idea for Hana to be Abbey's older sister came some time afterwards when brainstorming Hana's backstory.

Cara Delevingne

image

•Stumbled upon this picture as well. Primarly saved the image as clothing refs for Michiko Toyoda. I always commented on how Cara (who's name I didn't even know at the time) looked like an ideal daughter for Michiko.

Hana

imageimage

•So the base idea for Hana was set.  She would be the daughter of someone with Michiko's likeness and instead of being a highschool bully, she'd be the bitter sister of Abbey.  Her first concept drawing is a mix of the tall pixiv girl (the relaxed look), Cara Delevingne (the eyebrows and tall, slender body), and Michiko's design (identical color scheme; same eye, hair and skin color).  She's named Hana because Michiko Toyoda was named after Michiko Malandro who had a daughter named Hana Morenos.

History and Character Development

imageimage

•It was unusual how well received Hana was from her first two pictures (which I think look pretty bad).  She was and still is not meant to be likable.  I just wanted her to be this cool girl with immature tendencies developed from being a spoiled only child.  Petty complications are unnecessarily amplified by her personality.  She flirts and is terribly sarcastic.  And when she doesn't have her way she gets angry.  Hana was her mother's princess but when her sister comes along she's meant to become a bitter and jealous older sister and a rebellious daughter; nothing too complex on the surface.  My favorite thing about Hana (besides her hair) has always been how enigmatic she comes off as.  She appears to have everything together on the outside while her mind is full of uncertainty.  She's pretty and pretty flawed.  Her thoughts conflict with her emotions non-stop.  There's plenty of dumb and dangerous things she's done because she's impulsive and rash.  Her personality has put her in the wrong crowd and has gotten her into plenty of trouble.  The vibe she gives off is that of someone who isn't afraid of anything and she doesn't care what others think of her (but she definitely is insecure at times); she's chill and very comfortable with herself and honest with her emotions.

The Girl Crush

image

•I didn't think Hana would be liked so much and I still don't really understand how it happened but she's really well received.  There's a lot of things I learned about Hana through interactions with others through roleplaying and comments.  She got quite a few comments along the lines of "I think I'm in love" and "I have such a girl crush on her".  I actually planned for her sexual orientation to be straight but seeing all the 'girl crush' comments steered me towards having her identify with being bisexual.  It fit the rest of her character naturally like it was meant to be that way from the beginning.

 image

A girl was her first love; a boy was once in love with her—both were her two most serious and important relationships.  If anything sets her game off, it's love and the only thing she's afraid of is having her heart broken (and bugs).  She runs away from commitment and anything that would threaten her freedom and yet she wants as much attention as possible from anyone (so so SO conflicting).  She gets attached to any number of people too easily and jealousy arises as a result.  Whether its Hana getting jealous of someone shes attached to for interacting with people other than herself or someone attached to Hana getting jealous over her flirting with others (which happens a lot).  Most of that was discovered about her through rp.  And most of these experiences are subtly written into her character for TΛB.

List of Influential Models and Actresses

•I watched a lot of movies/tv shows and saved a lot of photos of models and actresses just because something about them reminded me of Hana.  A lot of their fashion style and attitudes and body mannerisms are incorporated into Hana's character.  Hana's a very familiar girl and thats mostly because she has SO MANY points of influence.

Cara Delevingne Kaya Scodelario (Effy Stonem; Skins) Jessica StamKristen Stewart Missy Peregrym Angie Harmon (Jane Rizzoli; Rizzoli & Isles) Elsa Hosk Brit Marling Amber Heard (Piper; Drive Angry) Meghan Ory Gillian Zinser Evangeline Lilly Lauren German (Leslie Shay; Chicago Fire) Karsyn Bartruff Alexis Ren Laura Mennell •Various Models

Trivia

•Has one tattoo on the inside of her left wrist that reads "honour".  Honour was her girlfriend's name and when they broke up, Hana regretted ditching the bracelet she wore with Honour's name engraved on it.

•Named after Hana Morenos from Michiko to Hatchin.

•Dyed her hair red during her early rebel years.  Abbey has always looked up to Hana and would eventually dye the ends of her hair red when trying to be cool like her older sister.

Thanks for answering my question. I've never come across a female character, comic, TV show, movie, anything, who received so much female attraction, female attention, and I'm not sure what's attracted her to us so much. I think in general her likeability stems from her personality, she's flawed and we all like a flawed character, it makes her more relatable. I've got to congratulate you Caleb, on making a vivid and truly interesting character. And I agree, her hair is fabulous.

Hana certainly is an interesting character with that cool aura you wanted. I think her personality flaws are less visible for most of your dA watchers, though, since we only see the art. So instead, our main impression of her is how she presents herself.

Either way, love the art.

I've always enjoyed the pictures you've posted of her and I've wanted to learn more about her since I first found you on DeviantArt and scrolled through your gallery. This was really insightful and made an amazing character into something more that people can relate to in their own ways. I love that you put so much thought into your characters' attitudes and backgrounds and I can't wait to see how TAB turns out :D

This is really neat insight. I love they you developed her character, I think she's a much more believable and despite the fact she might be a little bit bitter and spoiled, I think that all adds to her likability.

I love how you treat your characters as if they are their own individual, and separate peoples, and as if they are real people you are getting to know, and that you will never know everything about.
